American Sniper has prevailed at the box office yet again.
Box Office Mojo reports the film took in $31.8 million in theaters breaking Super Bowl weekend records and adding to its domestic gross profit total of over $248 million.
Although the military biopic directed by Clint Eastwood was released to select theaters on Christmas Day, the picture had its wide release on January 16. And since then it has amassed $316 million worldwide. Bradley Cooper portrays real-life late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in American Sniper, which also stars Sienna Miller. The picture has picked up several trophies this awards season including a Critics’ Choice Award and an American Film Institute accolade. American Sniper has also received six Academy Award nods in the categories of Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
Paddington came in second this week, with earnings of just over $8.5 million. The family film centers on the adventures of the eponymous fictional British bear and classic children’s character Paddington, who is voiced by Ben Whishaw. Although it has only earned $50.5 million in the US since its domestic release on January 16, worldwide it’s doing pretty well. Paddington, which was made with an estimated budget of $50 million, has taken in over $196 million internationally.
In third place this week is Project Almanac, which earned $8.5 million in its debut. The picture is about a group of teenagers who construct a time machine and the invention creates tremendous havoc.
Black or White also premiered on January 30, a racially charged drama starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer. The picture landed in fourth place with a disappointing gross profit of under $6.5 million.
