The creators of the live-action remake of Mulan, a la the latest Beauty and The Beast remake, are saying that at this point, there will be no music included in the film.
Hold your horses there for a second, creators. NO MUSIC?!
There are two reasons Mulan is my favorite Disney movie of all time:
- Mulan is a kick-butt female protagonist who doesn’t need a man. Hallelujah sisters!
- THE MUSIC.
Or if you prefer the classic Xtina version, I give you Exhibit C.
This is an abomination.
All this means is that they’re going to have to make another, because no way is this film going to fall in line with the rest of the live-action remakes, which have been great.
Director Niki Caro says that she and producer Sean Bailey have a vision for the film that doesn’t include the music, but that is a “big, girly martial arts epic” that will be extremely “muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.”
All of those things = great. But make a different movie. Because Mulan without the music just isn’t Mulan.
