The Dark Knight Rises has triumphed at the domestic box office for the third straight week.
The Christopher Nolan-directed Batman action film starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway earned $36.4 million. Although The Dark Knight Rises' July 20 weekend premiere was marred by a fatal shooting that took the lives of 12 people in Aurora, Colorado, fans have been flocking to the theaters to view the movie. Gross profits on the film since its release is in excess of $354 million.
Sci-fi remake Total Recall debuted in second place with $26 million. The film starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel had a production budget of about $125 million. Critics predict that the feature's run at the box office will resemble earlier big budget effects-driven release Battleship, which accrued a disappointing domestic lifetime gross of $65 million.
Family comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days came in third earning $14.7 million. The third movie in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise earned considerably less than the other two that debuted at around $20 million each consecutively in March of 2010 and 2011.
