January Jones' Mad Men wardrobe is a 'façade'
Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant has described the shift in wardrobe choices for Jessica Paré

January Jones' Mad Men costumes are designed with her character's "faade of perfection" in mind.

The actress plays Betty Francis in the hit TV show, which is set in America during the '60s. Betty is a mother-of-three, formerly married to womanising advertising executive Don Draper. Much has been made of ex-model Betty's weight gain in the newest season, and the show's costume designer Janie Bryant has revealed her inspiration behind the character's new wardrobe.

"I've really loved Betty this year. I think there were only two of her costumes that I didn't design and build from scratch, so it's been a great season for that. I've always had so much compassion for her character. I think the audience may not care for her, but I always feel like she's just so unhappy," she told The Cut.

"The costume design for her is always about her faade of perfection, and there is always an element of the classic lady. But this year, it's been so different because she has a different figure now, and she's struggling with her weight gain, and that affects her in how she wears her clothes."

Jessica Par plays Megan Draper in the hit series - who is married to Don, played by Jon Hamm. Jessica's character leaves her copywriting job to pursue a career in acting, and Janie has revealed the character's outfit transition.

"I know a lot of people really miss seeing the office Megan and all of the beautiful costumes she'd wear out to dinner, but it's important to tell that story of the change that she makes during the season when she decides to become an actress," she said. "Also, I want her costumes to tell the story of the age difference between her and Don."
