Well, another day, another name added to the list.
Today it’s Matt Lauer. “The Today Show” announced just before 6 am this morning that NBC has fired Matt Lauer after a female coworker submitted a detailed report of inappropriate sexual conduct in the workplace.
The alleged incident reportedly happened during the Rio Olympics in 2016. Further details are not known, however, NBC did acknowledge that they have reason to believe this is not an isolated incident.
I hate that this doesn’t come as a surprise. But let’s recall the public dissonance in his marriage in 2006. Where his wife Annette filed divorce papers that said among other things that her husband’s “other interests” were more important to him than his family. She also referred to him as “controlling.” I recall at that time having a really hard time looking at Matt Lauer as the kind and affable man that “The Today Show” wanted us to see.
Truly, this one felt like it came from nowhere for many people at NBC, and viewers of Matt Lauer, and Savannah Guthrie had a very difficult time with the announcement at the top of the show.
And yet… journalists at Variety had been working on a piece about Matt Lauer for months. Stay tuned for that to drop!
At @Variety, @RaminSetoodeh & I had been working on a Matt Lauer story for months and NBC was aware. There are multiple women we’ve spoken to with far-ranging accusations against Lauer. The power of journalism has never been more evident with this cultural change.
