Alfie Allen recalls how “horrible” it was watching Sophie Turner act out a rape scene for Game of Thrones.
The British actor, and younger brother of pop star Lily Allen, stars as Theon Greyjoy in the fantasy series, which is currently in its sixth series. It’s known for its violence as well as its explicit sex scenes, and when both were combined it left Alfie feeling shook up.
“I don’t really want to talk about it all that much – but the Season 5 scene that was the wedding night between Ramsay and Sansa – was a horrible day to shoot,” he told news.com.au, referring to a scene in which Alfie’s alter ego watches as Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) rapes Sophie’s Sansa.
“Sophie Turner is just such a mature, amazing lady that brings life and light on to the set in so many ways but it was a hard day. It really was a horrible day but Sophie really dealt with that issue very, very well.”
It was this horrendous scene, as well as another involving burning a child princess at a stake, which caused viewers to voice their concern over the show taking things too far in 2015. Looking back, the 29-year-old understands how both triggered such an uproar, but sticks to his opinion that Ramsay and Sansa’s is more traumatic.
“To be honest I thought people made more of a furore over the Sansa scene,” he added. “But how do you compare them – the burning of a child to what happened in that room with Ramsay and Sansa? I guess with that scene, it happens off camera and what you don’t see is always going to be more terrifying when you just leave it to the imagination.”
Alfie also noted that the “blood, gore and violence” featured reflects human nature, and that those who can’t handle watching it on TV shows should avoid the news.
