Amy Schumer has reacted with shock after a gunman opened fire at a screening of her movie Trainwreck.
A gunman began shooting in a theater full of 100 people in the city of Lafayette last night, leaving three people dead and injuring nine others. The 58-year-old gunman was among those who died, and authorities have said they will not be releasing his identity until they have searched several addresses which are linked to him.
Amy is the star of the romantic comedy and has expressed her horror at the events via Twitter.
“My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana,” she wrote.
The incident occurred at around 7.20pm local time and it’s been confirmed that the gunman had a criminal history, although it wasn’t recent, and was acting alone. He was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot, with police confirming he used a semi-automatic handgun.
Some of those injured have life-threatening injuries and one woman has already had surgery, leaving her in a critical condition.
Initially there were concerns there could have been a bomb in the shooter’s vehicle after a suspicious package was seen. The area was cleared while experts checked it, but it wasn’t an explosive.
At the moment no motive for the attack is known, but some reports about what happened inside the theater have started to leak through. Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal has been to one of the hospitals treating those involved and explained that a teacher inside the theater managed to raise the alarm during the gunfire, which saved many lives. Police were on the scene in less than a minute.
“Even though she was shot in the leg, she had the presence of mind to pull the fire alarm to help save other lives,” he said.
“I think as we learn more about the details tonight, we are going to hear about other acts of selfless heroism of people trying to help each other and trying to save other lives.”
Several stars have already offered tributes to those who have lost their lives, among them director Kevin Smith and singer Sam Smith.
“Terrible news out of LAFAYETTE: gunman opens fire in movie theater… 2 people died because they wanted to see a movie (sic),” Kevin tweeted.
Sam wrote: “ANOTHER shooting. What is happening. So sad. Thoughts are with the family’s of those injured and killed x (sic).”
