Asia Argento has threatened to sue Rose McGowan over a claim she had sex with the actor Jimmy Bennett when he was 17 years old.
The allegation first surfaced in a New York Times report last month (Aug18), revealing her late boyfriend, the TV chef Anthony Bourdain had agreed a $380,000 (£296,000) settlement with Bennett, 22, to put an end to the matter. Argento, 42, initially denied having any sexual relationship with the former child star but has now accused him of sexually assaulting her.
McGowan, 45, who grew close to the Italian actress while campaigning against sexual assault as part of the #MeToo movement, said she had seen text messages in which her former friend confessed to the alleged sexual relationship – claims Argento is now threatening to sue her over.
“Dear @RoseMcGowan. It is with genuine regret that I am giving you 24 hours to retract and apologise for the horrendous lies made against me in your statement of August 27th,” the xXx star wrote on Twitter on Monday (17Sep18). “If you fail to address this libel I will have no option other than to take immediate legal action.”
In her statement McGowan said Argento had texted her lover, Rain Dove, admitting that she had slept with Bennett, and also alleged the texts contained a confession she had been receiving unsolicited explicit pictures from him since he was aged 12. The Grindhouse actress is yet to publicly respond to the legal threat.
Dove passed the alleged texts onto California police, who are investigating as at 17, Bennett was a minor at the time of the alleged sexual encounter in a hotel in Marina del Rey, California in May 2013.
Via her lawyers, Argento has since accused the actor, who appeared in her 2004 film The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, of “sexually attacking” her. His attorney, Gordon K. Sattro, responded, by saying he was “shocked, appalled, and disgusted” by the claim.
Both she and McGowan claim they were raped by Harvey Weinstein – allegations the disgraced movie mogul has denied.
