Asia Argento’s attorney has threatened legal action against the actress’ sexual assault accuser Jimmy Bennett if he makes any “slanderous” statements in a planned TV interview.
Bennett hit headlines last month (Aug18) after accusing the outspoken figure in the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct of seducing him in a California hotel room in 2013, when he was just 17.
Asia, 43, initially refuted the claims, insisting she never had a “sexual relationship” with her former movie co-star, but admitted that her late boyfriend, TV chef Anthony Bourdain, had agreed to pay Bennett $380,000 in an effort to stop him harassing her.
Text messages purportedly featuring Asia admitting to sleeping with the boy, and photographs showing them topless in bed together subsequently emerged online, prompting her to launch a vicious attack on Bennett, declaring herself as the real victim.
Bennett was expected to sit down to record an on-camera interview in Argento’s native Italy this weekend (22-23Sep18) to share his side of the story, but on Thursday (20Sep18), her attorney Mark Heller made sure to warn the 22 year old to choose his words carefully.
In the letter, obtained by TMZ.com, Heller declared the TV spot would be watched closely for any “slanderous, defamatory or untruthful statements” about Argento, who lost her gig as a judge on a TV talent show in Italy as a result of the scandal.
It’s not clear if Bennett has already taped the European TV chat, but he has also filed an official complaint with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, although authorities have yet to open a criminal investigation into his claims.
He decided to pursue legal action against Argento after she went public with her rape allegations against Harvey Weinstein last year (17). The disgraced producer has denied all claims of non-consensual sex.
