Bummer: “Hot Pursuit” falls flat at the box office

Avengers: Age of Ultron has dominated the weekend box office once again.

The Marvel feature took in $77.2 million with theatregoers over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to an impressive $312 million. Avengers: Age of Ultron, which cost $250 million to produce, is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Joss Whedon. The superhero action-adventure has been a huge hit with international audiences too since its May 1 release, as it has earned $874.9 million worldwide so far. Age of Ultron boasts an all-star cast, as superstars Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner are all part of the ensemble.

Hot Pursuit did not live up to its name at the box office, as the action-comedy took second place with earnings of $13.3 million in its debut.

Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara

The feature has major star power, as Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara serve as the leading ladies. Hot Pursuit centers on Officer Cooper (Reese), who has been tasked with protecting a drug dealer’s widow, Daniella Riva (Sofía). The movie was made with a budget of $35 million by production companies New Line Cinema, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Pacific Standard and it is distributed by Warner Bros.

The Age of Adaline came in third this week with gross ticket sales totaling $5.6 million. Blake Lively leads the historical drama, which was released on April 24. In three weeks The Age of Adaline has amassed $36.6 million. It was produced by Lakeshore Entertainment, Sidney Kimmel and RatPac-Dune production companies for $25 million. The Age of Adaline centers on actress Blake’s character Adaline Bowman, a woman who must decide whether she should give up her immortality for love. Ellen Burstyn also stars in the film along with Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker.
