Before the nation was captivated by the first season of “Serial” or the Netflix Original “Making a Murderer,” Sundance Documentary was on the case, or should I say on “the Staircase.”

This eight part Documentary featured on the Sundance Documentary Channel has captivated my weekend. It is the real story of the death of a prominent woman in Durham, North Carolina, Kathleen Peterson, the wife of a well known newspaper columnist, Michael Peterson. She was found in a pool of blood at the bottom of one of their mansion’s staircases. Was it a fall? Or was it murder?

The complex tale is woven throughout the docu-series through footage of the family, interviews with the key players, and scenes from the courtroom. Stories of affairs, double lives, and another mysterious death crop up in the midst of this true story that unfolded between 2001-2004.

I honestly cannot believe that this documentary never reached the public acclaim that “Serial” or “Making a Murderer” did. It has everything and more. If you loved “Serial” or “Making a Murderer” get into “The Staircase” immediately. You’ll be able to fit it in before your Sundance Doc Club membership free month is up!

Watch the first episode here, and then sign up for your free month to devour the rest!
