Blake Shelton has taken on online trolls by reading out mean messages about his “Sexiest Man Alive” title.
The country singer was named as People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2017 on Wednesday (15Nov17), succeeding 2016 winner Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Though Blake accepted the win with humor and humility, not everyone was convinced he was the right celebrity for the award – and the star has now posted a video on his Twitter page sharing some of the more critical messages he’s received.
“Woke up this morning to news that Blake Shelton is the Sexiest Man Alive. RIP every sexy man in the world who died in the ‘Great Sexy Plague of 2017’ overnight. You will be missed,” stated Blake in the clip, before reading out another tweet, sharing, “Woke up and saw Blake Shelton is the Sexiest Man Alive. Did a bunch of celebrities die or something?”
Blake then recited some more messages including one where a user commented that he looked like a man who would tell you about “hearty, healthy American dog food” or in drug abuse awareness commercials. But he concluded his video with his “favourite” tweet, as sent by a user named Jonas.
“We may be living in a time of division and strife, but at least People magazine has united us in our certainty that Blake Shelton isn’t the Sexiest Man Alive,” he said.
While the Goodbye Time hitmaker saw the funny side of the backlash, many fans wrote gushing messages in support of his new title. One Twitter user wrote that “every woman” is looking for a man with his sense of humor, while another added: “He has it all, humor, kindness, humility, true to his roots, kids and animals like him, romantic oh yeah and very easy on the eyes in a manly way! No pretty boy stuff here!”
The 41-year-old’s girlfriend Gwen Stefani also sent a loving message to her beau.
“I guess I’ve been kissing the #sexiestmanalive all this time but @people I knew that allready (sic)!!” she recently wrote on Twitter, adding a photo of the couple kissing.
