Actor Bryan Cranston had an unsettling meeting with Charles Manson before the cult leader and his followers became mass murderers.
The Breaking Bad star relived the eerie encounter in a Twitter post on Monday (20Nov17), a day after the Manson Family leader died aged 83, revealing he met Manson in 1968 in Los Angeles.
“Hearing Charles Manson is dead, I shuddered,” he wrote. “I was within his grasp just one year before he committed brutal murder in 1969. Luck was with me when a cousin and I went horseback riding at the Spahn Ranch (where Manson and his ‘family’ were living), and saw the little man with crazy eyes whom the other hippies called Charlie.”
Cranston, who was 12 at the time, discussed the experience in greater detail with The Daily Beast last year (16), vividly describing how members of Manson’s cult flocked around its leader.
“We noticed that the people around there were all strange in their own kind of interesting way,” he recounted. “There was an old guy checking us in and some guy in his twenties came in yelling, ‘Charlie’s on the hill! Charlie’s on the hill!’ Everybody looked around and there was this frantic nervous energy going on, and they all jumped on horses and away they went.”
When Bryan and his cousin later spotted a “trail of horses coming back”, they guessed that the Charlie in question was “this comatose, bearded, long-haired guy with big eyes, riding as if he’s just stuck to the back of a horse. Totally zoned out. You couldn’t take your eyes off him.
“My cousin turned back to me and said, ‘Wow, that guy’s weird.’ When we passed him and their whole group, she turned around again and said, ‘That must be Charlie,’ and I said, ‘Yeah… and Charlie’s freaky!’ We didn’t think anything of it.”
Manson was convicted of orchestrating seven murders in 1969, including the fatal stabbing of pregnant actress Sharon Tate, who was married to director Roman Polanski.
At the time of his death from natural causes, Manson had been incarcerated for more than 45 years. He was denied parole 12 times.
