Pop music fads come and go with the seasons. Disco. Hair metal. Grunge. That weird time in 1997 when we thought that swing music needed a revival. The Billboard Hot 100 chart waxes and wains with strange, delightful and sometimes awful sonic treats.
2017, for better or for worse, is the year of the finger snap. I have no idea why pop music has embraced the crack of finger snaps. I must have misread the minutes taken at the Pop Music Master Meeting when all songwriters and producers decided, yeah, let’s make everything LITERALLY snappy (this meeting doesn’t exist but I like to think pop music is made by an impersonal governing body).
It seems that every third song released this year contains clicks and pops. Is it suppose to convey casual coolness, an aloofness to traditional instruments that can only be captured with two body parts brushing against each other? Did record companies cut their budgets so producers had to get inventive? If this is the case, why hasn’t pop music embraced the magic of musical cans?!
I DON’T KNOW.
I do know, however, that finger snap are hardly novel (Lorde, T-Pain, Lil’ Jon have some of my preferred snappy tracks of recent memory), but finger snaps are uniquely embedded in this year’s pop music consciousness, for sure.
Let’s sample some of offenders, shall we?
Alessia Cara’s “Scars To Your Beautiful” came out in 2016, but it’s still in heavy rotation this year. So it counts.
“That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars. SNAP.
“Swish Swish” by Katy Perry ft. Nicki Minaj. SNAP SNAP, BISH.
“It Ain’t Me” by Kygo ft. Selena Gomez. It might be you snappin’, Selena.
“I’m The One” by DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, Lil’ Wayne. SNAP.
“Down” by Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane. SNAPPY SNAP SNAP SNAP.
“Most Girls” by Hailee Steinfeld. If you wanna be like most girls, you gotta SNAP.
“Strip that Down” by Liam Payne ft. Quavo. SNAP that down.
“Bad Liar” by Selena Gomez. I’m tryin’, I’m tryin’, I’m tryin’ not to SNAP.
These are just tracks that are hot on the charts, so I’m sure I missed many others. So many finger snaps to find, so little time to catch them all…
