Charlie Sheen will reportedly address tabloid rumors suggesting he is HIV positive during a candid U.S. TV chat on Tuesday morning.
The actor will sit down for a live interview with Today show frontman Matt Lauer and will make “a revealing personal announcement,” according to a press release.
Tabloid editors around the world have been speculating about a major star who has contracted the disease for weeks, and Britain’s The Sun has come under scrutiny after it posted an expose regarding the unnamed A-List actor, who is reportedly causing “panic” in Hollywood.
The actor has declined to confirm the rumors, but top Hollywood publicist and crisis manager Howard Bragman has fueled the claims by speaking out following the announcement.
Bragman told People magazine he was approached by people close to Sheen six months ago to try and deal with the crisis, but never dealt with the star directly.
“The interview could open up a lot of sympathy for him, but he has to be concerned about a fear of litigation from former sexual partners,” said Bragman. “You don’t take that lightly.”
The publicist added that Sheen had been getting treatment, according to information he had received, and those close to the former Anger Management actor knew all about his health struggle.
“It’s been going on for quite awhile,” he continued. “He’s not necessarily comfortable talking about it. It was very hard to get up the courage for him to talk about it.
“I’ve known about this a long time, it’s not a surprise to me. I feel very sorry for his pain. And I hope it’s used as a teachable moment for the world. This is a disease that can affect anyone.”
Jeff Ballard, Sheen’s longtime publicist, has also spoken to the publication, informing them the actor is no longer his client.
“We had a disagreement how to handle a situation and we parted ways,” he said. “We have had a 35-year friendship and I love him. I wish him nothing but the best.”
