Chrissy Metz has detailed the beatings she received at the hands of her stepfather in her new memoir.
The actress has quickly become a TV favourite thanks to her role as Kate Pearson in award-winning series This Is Us.
And as well as her acting skills, Chrissy has also become an advocate for body positivity. But she hasn’t always been proud of her curves, and has recalled a time during childhood when she was made to feel ashamed about her frame by her mother Denise’s husband, who she called Trigger.
“I’m a tough cookie,” Chrissy told People magazine. “But it’s one of those things that attempts to break your spirit.”
The actress, whose own father left when she was just eight, went on to share some excerpts from her book, This Is Me.
“My mom married Trigger at the courthouse. Soon she was pregnant again, with another girl, Abigail,” Chrissy wrote. “Trigger loved his two biological children, and was even welcoming to (my half-sister) Morgana. Me, not so much.”
Chrissy explained her mother was often at work, so she didn’t see how her husband was treating her daughter, adding that in particular her body seemed to “offend” Trigger, who would stare at her when she was eating.
“He joked about putting a lock on the refrigerator. We had lived with a lack of food for so long that when it was there, I felt like I had to eat it before it disappeared. Food was my only happiness,” she wrote.
Chrissy, who also has older siblings Monica and Philip, then began to hide her eating. She’d get up in the middle of the night and eat, sneaking foods like cookies and chips into the bathroom, which she could “eat as fast as possible to avoid detection”.
“I don’t remember why Trigger hit me the first time,” she continued. “He never punched my face. Just my body, the thing that offended him so much. He shoved me, slapped me, punched my arm.”
Despite the abuse she suffered at his hands, the 37-year-old has forgiven Trigger for the way he treated her growing up and they’ve since made amends.
“We have a relationship now,” Chrissy wrote. “I do love him and I do care about him.”
