David Hasselhoff is reportedly in talks to take on a judging role on the rebooted U.S. talent show American Idol.
The program will be returning to the small screen later this year (17), with Katy Perry the only confirmed judge on the panel. And while names including Lionel Richie, Keith Urban and Nile Rodgers are already in the mix, sources close to the production have told New York Daily News that Knight Rider star David is also a contender.
According to the publication, David has been in talks with TV network ABC and production company FremantleMedia about the potential gig.
“David is interested in the role and his management have made contact with the show’s executives with a view to working out a deal,” a source told the Daily News.
Of course, David is no stranger to the world of television talent shows. He was a judge on America’s Got Talent between 2006 and 2009, and appeared on the panel of the British version of the show, Britain’s Got Talent, for one season in 2011.
“This is the type of show he does as much for his passion for this work as for the money,” the source continued. “He has always been vocal about his love for these live reality shows, and could never stop praising what he had achieved through America’s Got Talent.”
ABC are reportedly undecided whether they need two or three stars to sit alongside Katy on the panel. Ryan Seacrest is returning to the show as host, with insiders adding that he and David “get along well”.
And while David’s popularity in Hollywood has its ebbs and flows, he is currently at the top of his game in the industry, according to another TV source.
“David goes in and out of favor in Hollywood, but at this moment he is red hot,” the insider said. “He was in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Baywatch (movie), his faux reality show is doing well in Europe and there is serious talk of a Knight Rider comeback.”
Representatives for David and Idol failed to respond to the Daily News’ requests for comment.
