Ed Sheeran is “really healthy” for the first time in his life.

The Shape of You singer performed at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend virtual festival over the weekend, and during a chat with radio presenter Jordan North to discuss his upcoming set, Ed revealed that he decided to get fit during the Covid-19 pandemic, with him ditching the regular takeaways and taking up daily exercise.

“It’s the first time I’ve been really healthy,” he said. “I’ve kind of stopped all the bad habit stuff in my life. Started exercising every day. I was eating like a takeaway every single day, and now I don’t eat takeaway every single day and yeah, it’s good.”

He went on to explain that he started focusing on his health after finishing his globe-trotting ÷ Tour in 2019.

“It just happened,” he added. “And because I wasn’t having chicken wings and two bottles of wine a night.”

Ed previously said on the Behind the Medal podcast in December 2019 that he took up running after he quit smoking.

“I stopped smoking three years ago and then ever since then started exercising. I love it,” he said at the time. “I started doing it because when I stopped smoking, I was very aware that my lungs were so full of s**t that I needed to clear them out. Gyms are good but there’s nothing like fresh air to really give you a clean out. That’s, for me, the main reason why I started doing it.”

Ed, who welcomed his first child with wife Cherry Seaborn last year, is gearing up to make his music comeback after taking a break following the release of his album, No.6 Collaborations Project, in summer 2019.
