Bowie, the other-worldly musician who broke pop and rock boundaries with his creative musicianship, nonconformity, striking visuals and a genre-spanning persona he christened Ziggy Stardust, died of cancer Sunday aged 69. When it comes to celebrity passings, 2016 was a rough year. Not only were so many of the people that died iconic and the best at what they did, many left us too soon. Prince was 58, Alan Thicke was 69, Carrie Fisher 60, for example.

RIP to the people we lost in 2016. This is part of the reason so many people are ready to leave 2016 behind.

(Also Debbie Reynolds, who died at the age of 84 on December 28th, 2016).
