As a child of the 80’s, “Gimme A Break” was standard TV fare. Nell Carter as the wise-cracking housekeeper of the Kanisky family is pure sitcom gold. In fact, if you’re looking for an old school YouTube binge, I highly recommend scouring the Internets for old episodes.
In addition to being hilarious (most of the time), the show occasionally lays bare just how much society has changed in the last 30 years.
Take episode five, “Do or Diet,” as an example.
In the episode, Nell decides to lose weight, so she joins a “diet group” called P.O.R.K.O. The entire story line is just one big fat joke after another. It’s uncomfortable, even for my typically low bar.
Most of the time I watch TV from my childhood, I get all nostalgic-y for “the way things used to be.” Then there are times I’m horrified at the way we “used to be.” This is one of those times.
Still, it’s an enlightening episode. Clearly, we treat people of all shapes and sizes with way more respect than we did 30 years ago.
