Sheet masks have been increasing in popularity in recent years – most of us have probably tried one at some point in our lives and they’re now stocked virtually everywhere.

But how effective are they in reality? And what’s the difference between a regular high-street sheet mask and biocellulose ones?

“Sheet masks are materials which have been infused with skin boosting ingredients or serums. A sheet mask forms a barrier over the skin surface, which in effect minimises any loss of ingredients through evaporation. Cotton sheet masks are the most widely available due to the ease of manufacturing,” explains Dr Adil Sarwar, skincare expert and founder of Skin Science Clinic London. “A biocellulose mask is more technologically advanced than a sheet mask, manufactured in a laboratory from bacteria resulting in tightly packed cellulose fibres. These fibres are hundreds of times finer than a regular sheet mask, allowing for tighter adherence to skin with proven penetration into the skin layers.”

These superior masks also boast a ton of benefits as the ingredients are absorbed into the skin more deeply, offering up more hydration over a longer period of time.

“You’ll notice that when you touch a biocellulose mask its fabric is extremely moist – and when you apply it, it will quickly deliver a refreshing, cool sensation to your skin; which feels great and is really relaxing,” says Vanessa Charest, aesthetic practitioner at London Real Skin. “Biocellulose masks are likely to provide the best results when compared to cheaper paper ones due to the fabric technology; designed like an artificial skin layer.

“The majority of facial masks marketed today feature fabrics made from wood pulp or coarse fibres. Biocellulose fibres are four times stronger than plant-based cellulose and are able to attract and retain fluid in great capacity.”
