Iconic Kurt Cobain cardigan sells for $334,000 at auction

The cardigan Kurt Cobain wore for his 1993 MTV Unplugged performance has sold for a staggering $334,000 at auction.

The Nirvana frontman’s widow, Courtney Love, gifted the mohair sweater to Jackie Farry, who worked as a nanny for the couple’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain, after the rocker’s 1994 death – and she later sold it.

Now, the anonymous businessman who purchased it at an auction four years ago for $137,500 (£112,000) has made a huge profit on the item. It was sold via California-based Julien’s Auctions on Saturday alongside a letter of authenticity from Farry.

The cardigan was expected to bring in big money, after a fan offered the pre-auction minimum bid of $200,000 (£163,000) weeks before the auction went live. Experts had predicted the sale price could rise as high as $300,000 ($245,000).

The cardigan was previously described as “a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discolouration near left pocket and discolouration on right pocket”.

A spokesman for Julien’s emphasised that the item had not been cleaned since it was worn by the Smells Like Teen Spirit hitmaker.

“It’s very important that we don’t wash it,” Darren Julien recently told Rolling Stone. “The stains are still there. There’s even cigarette burns that you can see on the sweater.”
