The Friends actress and the 47-year-old actor, who were married for two years until 2017, got together to spend their final moments with their rescue pet, which were detailed in a series of images posted to The Leftovers star’s Instagram account on Sunday.
The former couple were joined by family members, as they took part in a spiritual ceremony to give their ailing white German Shepherd, who was wrapped in a cosy blanket scattered with flowers, a dignified send off.
“Tonight, at sunset, after a heroic struggle… our most loyal family member and protector, Dolly A. laid down her sword and shield. She was surrounded by her entire family,” Theroux wrote in the emotional post. “‘The one that never deserts, the one that never proves ungrateful… is the dog— faithful and true, even in death’ -George Vest. Rest In Peace Dolly.'”
Dolly, who was named after country legend Dolly Parton, was adopted in 2006 by the Horrible Bosses actress, and in March last year, she and Theroux reached an agreement to share custody of her and their three other dogs, which include their terrier Clyde and pit bull mix Sophie.
Aniston has previously opened up on her devotion to her pets, revealing during a press conference back in 2009: “Men come and go, but there really is no relationship like the one you have with a dog.
“It is a pity that they – the dogs that is – don’t live as long as they should. You have to say goodbye way too soon. It makes me so sad. But the love of a dog is unconditional and I really love that. They are real friends.”
