Joaquin Phoenix: ‘The Joker role could be interesting’

Joaquin Phoenix has divulged that he could be interested in playing The Joker in a standalone film.

Rumors swirled in February (18) that the Walk the Line actor was the top choice to star in Todd Phillips’ upcoming origins movie which is being made by DC Comics and Warner Bros.

While Variety previously reported that Phoenix had met with Warner Bros. bosses last year about the role, he has remained tight-lipped on the speculation, although he admitted in a chat with Fandango on Monday (02Apr18) that he would be open to the part.

“I don’t know… it could be an interesting character, I don’t know,” he grinned, before adding that he would contemplate appearing in a major comic book-inspired film if the project truly appealed to him. “I see it as any other movie. I wouldn’t say… ‘I won’t do Westerns.’ It depends on what it is. I don’t really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker.”

While Phoenix hasn’t starred in a comic book film before, he was considered for the role of Lex Luthor in another DC movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which ultimately went to Jesse Eisenberg, and was in talks to play Marvel superhero Doctor Strange, with the part eventually going to Benedict Cumberbatch.

The 43-year-old was most recently seen onscreen in thriller You Were Never Really Here as well as biblical drama Mary Magdalene, and explained to editors at the film publication that he is determined not to limit himself to any particular genre.

“If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that’s what you want to do. So, I wouldn’t say, hands down, no – I wouldn’t do that kind of movie,” he shared. “Everyone has to want to explore the same thing or else it just doesn’t f**king work. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t make decisions on budget or things like that – it’s really the filmmaker and the character.”

Phillips, who has also worked on Road Trip and War Dogs, will direct The Joker movie and co-write it with Scott Silver. Their story will delve into what happened to The Joker to turn him into an evil criminal mastermind and Batman’s most famous adversary.
