Julia Roberts’ first fan encounter was when someone wanted her autograph while she was sat on the toilet.
The 48-year-old actress began her career in the late ’80s, with Mystic Pizza marking her first big feature. While she didn’t think she was that famous following its release, one bizarre occasion changed that.
“I remember going to visit my mom in Georgia and my mom and my younger sister and I went out to a movie in a mall where I once worked across from the movie theater, serving snacks and frozen yogurt, delightfully… and (I remember) after the movie going to the bathroom,” she explained to talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, admitting it didn’t sound like a great story when said aloud.
“Is that the end of it?” Jimmy quipped, to which the audience and Julia erupted into laughter.
“I was in the bathroom, and a voice suddenly said, ‘Girl in stall number one, were you in Mystic Pizza?'” Julia recalled. “And suddenly like this (Julia grabs paper off Jimmy’s desk) a pen and a piece of paper went… (motions reaching under the door of the cubicle). I said, ‘Uh huh, my hands are busy. Maybe in a minute!'”
Julia was on the show to promote her new movie, Secret in Their Eyes, in which she stars opposite Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor. But as she’s been sworn to secrecy when it comes to revealing the thrillers plot, the actress joked there’s no point in even promoting it.
“It seemed to go well, no one left,” she grinned, referring to the Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday (11Nov15). “Honestly there’s no reason for me to do a press tour because I can’t say anything.”
But she has discussed how she prepared for the role of FBI investigator Jess, whose teenager daughter is brutally murdered. Being a mother herself, Julia admitted she couldn’t bring herself to meet parents who had lost their children in real life as she didn’t think she could handle it.
