Jussie Smollett has no plans to meet with police

Jussie Smollett’s representative has dismissed reports suggesting the actor will meet with police investigators on Monday (18Feb19) following rumors he allegedly orchestrated his attack.

Last month (Jan19), the Empire star alleged he was the victim of a racist and homophobic assault outside his apartment in Chicago, Illinois, telling police two men tied a rope noose around his neck and poured a bleach-like liquid over him, while hurling racist and homophobic slurs at him. Brothers Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo were detained last week (14Feb19) and described as “potential suspects” before they were released without charge on Friday.

Over the weekend (16-17Feb19), Chicago Police Department officials revealed information uncovered during questioning of the brothers had “shifted the trajectory of the investigation”, and police are keen to speak once again to the 36-year-old actor and singer.

According to reports, Jussie was set to meet with authorities on Monday, but his publicist is now denying that story.

“There are no plans for Jussie Smollett to meet with Chicago police today,” a statement from Anne Kavanagh reads. “Any news reports suggesting otherwise are inaccurate. Smollett’s attorneys will keep an active dialogue going with Chicago police on his behalf. We have no further comment today.”

Rumors circulated last week the actor orchestrated his own attack in response to allegedly being written out of Lee Daniels’ musical drama, Empire. However, bosses at 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment, who produce the show, denied the claims.

Smollett has also vehemently denied allegations he set up the attack, insisting he is “angered and devastated” by the rumors.
