Kim Kardashian West is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday (30May18) as part of her prison reform campaign.
Sources told TMZ that the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star and her attorney Shawn Holley had scheduled a meeting to discuss the plight of drug offender, Alice Marie Johnson, who is currently serving a life sentence without parole for her first offence at the Aliceville Correctional Facility in Alabama. Kim is expected to ask Trump to pardon the great-grandmother.
It’s the latest development in the case after it became national news last year (17) when Kim brought the 62-year-old’s plight to the world stage via Twitter and her 60 million followers.
The reality TV star has since been working with the President’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner “for months” to free Johnson, after pledging to tackle one case of criminal justice reform a year.
Johnson was jailed in 1997 for her role in a drug ring, her first offense, after she got involved with cocaine dealers following the loss of her job, her son, her marriage, and her home. Johnson claims to have only ever served as an intermediary for the drug dealers and never sold the illegal substance herself.
“If you think about a decision that you’ve made in your life and you get life without the possibility of parole for your first time non-violent offense, there’s just something so wrong with that,” Kim told Mic.com recently. “I’ve been in communication with the White House and trying to bring her case to the President’s desk and figure out how we can get her out.
“That’s such a huge step from where we started with that not even being on their radar.”
Kim is set to make the visit to the White House without the KUWTK cameras, her sisters or Trump-supporter husband Kanye.
According to The Sun, the U.S. president is said to be in favour of waiving Johnson’s sentence after the move was backed by daughter Ivanka.
A petition calling for Johnson’s release has also garnered more than 260,000 signatures.
