Lady Gaga to perform National Anthem at Super Bowl

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has been given the honor of singing the U.S. National Anthem at Sunday’s (07Feb16) Super Bowl.

The Born This Way star will follow in the footsteps of Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and last year’s (15) singer Idina Menzel when she belts out The Star-Spangled Banner before the big football game in Santa Clara, California.

She will be joined by hearing-impaired Oscar winner Marlee Matlin, who will perform the song in American Sign Language.

While Gaga helps kickoff the Super Bowl, the half-time entertainment will come from Coldplay, who will be joined onstage by Beyonce and Bruno Mars.

The news of Gaga’s appearance comes hours after Grammy Awards organizers announced the Poker Face star will be performing a tribute to the late David Bowie during their annual music prizegiving on 15 February (16).

The music legend, who passed away on 10 January (16) after a battle with cancer, is to be awarded the organization’s Lifetime Achievement prize.

Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich revealed the Applause singer had already been asked to sing at the show, but they decided to change her set into a Bowie tribute after he died.

“We had already booked Lady Gaga on this year’s show, but when David passed – almost in a single moment – we knew we had to change direction,” Ehrlich explained in a statement. “We immediately spoke and agreed that she should be the one to honor David. She’s perfect for it.”
