Surprise! Lena Dunham releases second book

Lena Dunham

Girls star Lena Dunham has surprised fans with a book full of her thoughts from a decade ago.

Is It Evil Not to Be Sure? is a collection of Lena’s diary entries from the mid 2000s.

The actress and writer came across her musings recently, as she prepared to turn 30, and admits she had mixed emotions about releasing the pages for public consumption.

Lena told Buzzfeed she was filled with “the kind of mortification that is part and parcel with meeting a former version of yourself.”

“I was also moved by – maybe even proud of – how carefully I had recorded that period of time, my younger self’s commitment to capturing the kinds of hyper-internal formative moments so often lost to adulthood,” she added. “I have always believed that women chronicling their own lives, even (or especially) at their most mundane, is a radical act.”

Lena came across the diaries, which date from fall 2005 until spring 2006, as she recovered from surgery.

The star, who is a big supporter of women’s rights and female empowerment movements, has decided to give all proceeds from sales of the new book to non-profit organisation Girls Write Now. The charity helps mentor young women and pairs them with professional female writers for workshops and publishing opportunities.

The book news comes weeks after Lena confirmed her hit series Girls, which she also conceived in her early 20s, was to end after a sixth season next year.

“I conceived of Girls when I was 23, and now I’m nearly 30,” she said. “The show has quite perfectly spanned my twenties, the period of time that it’s about, and so it feels like the right time to wrap our story up.”

Is It Evil Not to Be Sure? is Lena’s second foray into publishing – she released a book of essays, titled Not That Kind of Girl, in September, 2014. She also has a weekly newsletter called Lenny Letter.
