Actor Kit Harington’s long and curly locks have encouraged thousands of male fans to perm their hair.
The hunky 29-year-old old star plays Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, on HBO network’s hit fantasy show Game of Thrones, and celebrity stylist Diana Schmidtke has seen the demand for chemical hair curling treatments increase in the months since the series’ sixth season began airing in April 2016.
“The man perm, or what I like to call the ‘merm’ – I can’t say it’s a trend yet,” she explains to USA Today. “It’s adding texture to an already current haircut, the high and tight.”
The ‘high and tight’ is a military-inspired form of the crew cut – the hair on the sides and back of the scalp is buzzed very closely to the head with a clear line delineating the top portion, which is normally a well-manicured hair tuft patch.
According to Diana, the Jon Snow-inspired perm partnered with this hairdo means the curls are a little less tight than the preferred compact ringlets of bygone eras.
“It’s not your 1980s perm anymore, the science has technically advanced,” she notes. “The stigma against the perm goes back to the big hair of the ’80s. And you can see now they’re using very large perm rods, which give looser curls.”
Diana explains the softer, tousled waves of the modern perm are achieved by using a cold perm technique – a procedure that takes about one hour to complete and does less damage to the hair.
But if men are seeking to walk out of the salon with Kit’s tresses, Diana advises these folks not to get their hopes up too high.
“It should be duly noted that Kit Harington’s hair is naturally curly,” she stresses. “In photoshoots or on the red carpet you see they actually relax his hair.”0
