The U.S. TV presenter broke the sad news on her Instagram page on Sunday, posting a picture of herself and Litsa laying on a bed and writing: “RIP mom. God loved her so much he took her on greek easter.”
She added in Greek: “Christ is risen, mom.”
Litsa was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer, otherwise known as glioblastoma, in August 2016.
The mother-of-two and her husband Constantinos were also hospitalised while battling Covid-19 last year.
Commenting on Maria’s Instagram post, Zoe Saldana, Selma Blair, Michael Strahan, and Meghan Trainor were among those offering their condolences.
“Oh my sweet Maria… what a journey it has been to witness… you were both fighters and the love and quality time shared was beyond. I am sending you so much love and light and condolences to your whole family… she will ALWAYS be by your side,” wrote Emmanuelle Chriqui, while Ali Landry added: “Oh Maria! I am so sorry! I have watched your journey with your beautiful Mom for months now and have been praying fervently for your family! She Is a MIRACLE!!!! Her life and strength and your love as a daughter was a gift for all of us to see! She is now at peace with God in heaven! God rest her soul and may he surround your heart with grace, peace, and healing!”
