Melissa McCarthy talks pre-fame robbery, Halloween on Jimmy Kimmel

Melissa McCarthy could only think about the mascara her assailant was making off with when she was robbed at gunpoint.

The 44-year-old actress moved to Los Angeles when she was 17 and initially had no money and just the kitchen of her friend’s studio to sleep in. She worked a series of small jobs, including at a dry cleaners. It was here that a man attempted to steal from her.

“At 3 o’clock in the afternoon. [At a place where] it’s sunny and bright and people are out walking. I walked in, and there was a guy behind the register. And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s weird. I wonder if he lost his ticket.’ Then I see a gun, and I was like, ‘Oh my God!'” she recalled to talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

“Everything that you should say or do didn’t happen. And he had my backpack which was like my license, my keys, my make-up. I was like, ‘I can’t replace mascara I don’t have any money,’ I just kept crying, ‘You have my bag. It has my make-up in it! You have my bag!’ He was like, ‘Shut the blank up!’ with a gun. Now I’m like, ‘What an idiot!’ Why didn’t I just say, ‘Take it!” instead I was like, ‘My mascara!'”

The robber was eventually sent to prison, but Melissa still thinks back on that day. When she got home she was terrified the man would be able to get into the property as he had her keys, so she decided to talk to a friend on the phone. However, her pal was more interested in telling her about a bad audition, explaining it had felt like he had a gun to his head too. The star eventually hung up on the wannabe actor and they didn’t talk again.

Earlier this year Melissa left her hand and footprints at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and it made her think about how far she’s come.

“I thought, ‘I hope I do not end up laying on it,’ but I didn’t think I would [leave my hand prints there],” she said, when asked if she ever expected to be bestowed the honor.

Melissa also chatted about dressing up for a Halloween party at Adam Levine’s. She said her costume as her aunt Bernice, when every other woman was in a bikini, didn’t go over too well:
