Miley Cyrus breaks down in tears announcing Hurricane Harvey donation

Miley Cyrus became overcome with emotion as she spoke to U.S. chat show host Ellen DeGeneres about making a $500,000 (£388,000) donation to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

The tropical storm hit Texas late on Friday (25Aug17) and has since caused widespread devastation and flooding, particularly in the Houston area. At least 31 people are confirmed to have died as a result of the storm and tens of thousands have been forced to leave their homes.

The 24-year-old singer became emotional during her chat on The Ellen DeGeneres Show after the presenter praised her for donating $500,000 to hurricane relief efforts via her Happy Hippie Foundation.

“You’re amazing,” Ellen told the singer, who then broke down as she explained she had been motivated to donate by the thought of what it would be like to lose everything.

“Thank you, don’t make me cry,” Miley replied. “I can’t really talk about it (because) it just makes me really upset.”

Trying to compose herself, she added, “You know, my grandma’s sitting here (in the studio), my mum’s here – and I go home to my seven dogs – and if I didn’t have that anymore it’d just be really hard.

“I hope people understand that I can put myself in those people’s shoes and just know what it feels like to have everything taken away from you.”

Ellen has also made a hefty hurricane relief donation as she has teamed with bosses at U.S. retailer Walmart to give $1 million (£778,000) to a fund set up by American football star J.J. Watt.

In a clip that will air on Ellen’s show on 7 September (17), J.J., who plays for the Houston Texans, thanked the 59-year-old comedienne.

“Thank you to you, thank you to Walmart,” he said. “This is I promise you that I will make this money go a long way. I promise you that I will help these victims directly. I promise that it will help rebuild Houston. You’re incredible.”

Other stars who have made major donations include Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, the Kardashian family and celebrity chef Rachael Ray.

Comedian Kevin Hart launched his a fundraising drive and Beyonce has pledged her own charity will help “as many (people affected by the hurricane) as we can”.

Music acts including Fall Out Boy and Solange Knowles have also announced they will donate the proceeds of upcoming Texas concerts to relief efforts.
