Misty Copeland named first Black Principal Dancer in ABT

If the name Misty Copeland doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps this viral campaign for Under Armour will jog your memory:

Misty Copeland is possibly the first ballet dancer to hit the pop-culture mainstream since Mikhail Baryshnikov.

And now, ABT (American Ballet Theater) has named her a Principal Dancer in their company. This is the highest performance rank a ballet dancer can attain in a major ballet company. The first black female Principal in the company’s 75 year history.

Misty Copeland got her start in ballet at a late age through a Boys and Girls Club class. When her instructor saw her raw talent, she took her under her wing, and helped guide her on the road to her current position.

If you’re looking for a role model for young girls who need encouragement, introduce them to Misty Copeland. She’s a true star.
