Brian Williams has been suspended by NBC for six months without pay in the wake of admitting he embellished a story about his time covering the Iraq war in 2003.
NBC News Deborah Turness said in a statement Tuesday, “The suspension will be without pay and is effective. We let Brian know of our decision earlier today. Lester Holt will continue to substitute anchor the NBC Nightly News.”
Williams had already temporarily resigned from his post as weekend anchor of the NBC Nightly News, one he had held since 2007.
“As managing editor of NBC Nightly News,” Williams began, “I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, and Lester Holt has kindly agreed to sit in for me to allow us to adequately deal with this issue. Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us.”
