Reese Witherspoon has dismissed rumors that Steve Carell’s character in new series “The Morning Show” is based on Matt Lauer.
The actress is producing the new Apple TV+ series, as well as starring in it, and was asked about the comparisons being made between Carell’s Mitch Kessler and former Today show host Lauer, who is currently in the midst of a sexual abuse scandal surrounding allegations he has strenuously denied.
“No, this isn’t Matt Lauer; this is an amalgam of, unfortunately, a lot of different…” she told U.S. TV show Extra. “As we chose to make a fictional show, it’s about a lot of characters that it’s been exposed there is an abuse of power. I don’t think it’s one person.”
Jennifer Aniston, who also stars in and produces the show, added that it was important to both the actresses to reference what’s happening in the world in terms of the #MeToo movement.
“We had to honor what was happening out in the world and not ignore it,” she said. “Also, it was really important to us as a creative team to be clear and in tune (with) what the tone of that was, not make it sort of a sob story.”
Jennifer stars as an anchor in the program, while Reese takes on the role of a field reporter – with the pair coming to blows on numerous occasions during the first season.
But the former Friends star admitted that shouting at Reese, who she considers a close friend, took its toll on her.
“It’s hard to scream at her,” Jennifer told Entertainment Tonight. “It hurt my feelings. Meaning, I hurt my feelings yelling at you.”
