Reese Witherspoon is more complex than people think.
The Oscar winning actress has always been seen as the golden girl of the big screen thanks to roles in Legally Blonde and Just Like Heaven. But in April last year she was arrested for disorderly conduct after her husband Jim Toth was detained by police. While the mother-of-three was quick to apologize at the time, she has had time to reflect on her behavior and how it was perceived by the public.
“I think it was a moment where people realized that I wasn’t exactly what they thought I was,” the 38-year-old told reporters during a press conference at the London Film Festival. “I guess maybe we all like to define people by the way the media presents them, and I think that I showed I have a complexity that people didn’t know about.”
Reese was briefly jailed in Atlanta, Georgia, after getting into a verbal disagreement with an officer and ignoring his request to stay inside the vehicle she had been traveling in with her husband. Jim, who was driving, was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.139 and was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and failing to maintain a lane. Upon her release, Reese issued an apology to her fans.
“I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse,” she said.
Now however, the “Walk the Line” star is keen to let the issue drop and look to the future.
“It’s part of human nature. I made a mistake. We all make mistakes,” she added to the press. “The best you can do is say sorry and learn from it and move on.”0
