Rose McGowan is “heartbroken” over allegations Asia Argento sexually assaulted a young actor back in 2013.
The actresses were among the first celebrities to go public with sexual assault claims against movie producer Harvey Weinstein last year (17), and have since become allies and the most outspoken figures in the #MeToo movement against sexual abuse.
On Sunday (19Aug18), editors at the New York Times alleged that Argento had recently faced allegations of her own, and agreed to pay former child actor and musician Jimmy Bennett $380,000 (£298,000) after he claimed she sexually assaulted him in a California hotel room in 2013.
The news hit headlines around the world on Monday, and McGowan took to Twitter to seemingly distance herself from her pal.
“I got to know Asia Argento ten months ago. Our commonality is the shared pain of being assaulted by Harvey Weinstein,” she tweeted. “My heart is broken. I will continue my work on behalf of victims everywhere.”
She later added, “None of us know the truth of the situation and I’m sure more will be revealed. Be gentle.”
After coming forward with their claims about Weinstein, Argento and McGowan became friends and each other’s supporters, with the former Charmed star writing an open letter demanding online trolls stop attacking the actress, who she once described as a “remarkable human and brave survivor”, following the death of her boyfriend, celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, in June. Argento also appeared on McGowan’s reality series Citizen Rose.
In a document obtained by the New York Times, Bennett, who once played Argento’s son in the 2004 movie, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, claimed the Italian actress “performed oral sex” and “had intercourse” with him in a hotel room in May 2013, when he was 17 and she was 37.
Bennett’s lawyer reportedly sent a notice of intent to sue to Argento’s lawyer in November (17), asking for $3.5 million (£2.7 million) in damages for emotional distress, lost wages, assault and battery.
As part of their settlement, the actress and director allegedly agreed to pay Bennett $380,000 over the course of a year and a half, beginning with a payment of $200,000 (£157,000) that was made in April. Bennett also gave a photograph, which allegedly showing them topless in bed together, and its copyright to Argento.
Argento, now 42, is yet to publicly respond to the allegations, and her representatives have not returned WENN’s request for comment.
