You guys, we need to help out the Smithsonian!
The custodian of our national treasures needs a little help with preserving one of the most iconic pieces of pop culture: Dorothy’s red slippers from The Wizard of Oz. Apparently, the slippers that the Smithsonian possesses (there are four original pairs in existence) have fallen into disrepair, so the museum has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their preservation. And it ain’t cheap, kids. The Kickstarter is looking to raise $300,000 for the project. Yikes!
You might be asking, “Why do they need my money? Isn’t the museum funded by me, the taxpayer?” Well, that public money goes to the museum itself, but it doesn’t necessarily cover the cost of special projects like this. According to the Kickstarter page, funds raised will go to the following:
- Research needed to inform conservation decisions
- Materials and tools for conservation work
- State-of-the-art, climate-controlled display case
So donate now by going to the Kickstarter page and help save pop culture for future generations (you donation is tax deductible, too!)
