The truth is, I’m still grieving over the death of McDreamy, Dr. Derek Shepherd, the character played by Patrick Dempsy on “Grey’s Anatomy.” It took a while for me to stop being mad at the show creator, Shonda Rhimes for killing him off.
But now, Shonda’s talking about why she made the brutal decision to kill one of her main characters. During the 2015 Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills, Rhimes explained, “Either Derek was going to walk out on Meredith and leave her, I don’t know, high and dry, and what was that going to mean? That was going to suggest that the love was not true and the thing that we had said for 11 years was a lie and that McDreamy wasn’t McDreamy, so for me, that was untenable. Meredith and Derek’s love had to remain Meredith and Derek’s love, so as painful as it was for me as a storyteller, because I never really thought that was going to happen, the only way to preserve what felt true to me is that Derek was going to have to die in order for that love to remain honest.”
I have to give it to her, that’s a pretty good case. The bottom line is that for whatever reason Patrick Dempsy had to go (rumors are rampant that he was a diva on the set, and Shonda Rhimes is no nonsense when it comes to dealing with divas), and her allegiance was to the story and not to the viewers emotions. In the long term, had Derek Shepherd just ridden off into the sunset leaving behind his wife and family, we’d have changed our opinion of him and the whole story. But instead, he died doing what he loved, while still loving Meredith. It’s hard to be mad at that.
You got me again, Shonda. Right in the feels.0
