Tom Ford has complained the Met Gala isn’t as “chic” as it used to be.

In an excerpt of Anna: The Biography by Amy Odell, published by TIME, the fashion designer offered one piece of feedback to honorary chair Anna Wintour.

“The only thing about the Met that I wish hadn’t happened is that it’s turned into a costume party,” he fired. “That used to just be very chic people wearing very beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century. You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier.”

While Ford didn’t name Katy Perry explicitly, it appears the chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) wasn’t impressed with some of her previous outfits for the annual event.

The popstar sported a crystal chandelier-like creation by Moschino’s Jeremy Scott for the 2019 Met Gala and later changed into a hamburger costume for the after-party.

The 2022 Met Gala, which has the theme In American: An Anthology of Fashion, is to be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City on 2 May.
