Tom Hiddleston is hoping his highly-anticipated scene in upcoming film Crimson Peak will help “redress the balance” of nudity between the sexes in the movie business.
The 34-year-old actor strips off in both High-Rise and Crimson Peak, two pictures being released in 2015.
The scenes are causing something of a stir among Tom’s many fans, but the star’s decision to go naked is motivated by activism.
“It’s so often in movies that women are more naked than men and that’s unfair,” Tom told E! News. “We wanted to sort of redress the balance.”
Crimson Peak sees Tom star alongside Charlie Hunnam and Jessica Chastain.
The Guillermo del Toro film tells the story of an author who goes to escape her past in a spooky house.
The Gothic tone of the film made it easier for Tom to feel comfortable shedding his clothes on-screen.
“I didn’t have a problem with the nakedness because I felt that there’s always been a strain of sexuality in Gothic romance as much as there has been the fear of death and the threat of violence,” Tom continued. “It’s a very violent film and I felt like we needed to balance that. So if we’re going to bring up the violence we needed to bring up the sense of sexuality.”
Guillermo’s other films, which have included Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, are known for being visually beautiful.
And Tom said in another recent interview he was thrilled to be given the chance to work with such a perceptive director.
“The movie is absolutely beautiful,” Tom told Vulture. “It’s certainly the most beautiful film I’ve ever been in. It’s a Gothic fairy tale, so it has an extraordinary integrity in its design. It looks like a painting, and every single frame you disappear into in a way that perhaps only Guillermo del Toro can imagine.”
