Victoria Beckham’s microphone was switched off when she was onstage with the Spice Girls.
Opening up about her time in the Spice Girls, Victoria shared the revelation during a chat on Thursday night at the Vogue 100: A Century of Style exhibition.
The fashion designer, who went by the name Posh Spice in the group, was renowned for her lack of vocal ability, and during an interview she shared that confidence was so low in her singing skills that music bosses made the decision to silence her.
“They used to turn it off and just let the others sing,” she revealed to host Claudia Winkleman during the chat at London’s The National Portrait Gallery. “I got the last laugh – and now my mic is well and truly on, finally,” she smiled.
Victoria also admitted she often felt out of her comfort zone while performing with bandmates, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton.
“Luckily because I used to wear heels, I just used to jig about a bit and I got away with it but it never came easily. I was always much more reserved than the other girls,” Victoria shared.
However, when it came to their wardrobes, the 42-year-old singer-turned-designer managed to get her own back on the other girls who had very little fashion knowledge.
“I was always the one that loved fashion and it was quite a result for me because the girls always used to get their clothes for free because they were c**p and so there was a lot of budget for me to have my little Gucci dress,” she explained.
Victoria comments come amid talk of a Spice Girls reunion to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut single Wannabe. But recent reports suggest that the mother-of-four is reluctant to rejoin her bandmates on stage, while Mel C (Sporty Spice) is also said to be digging in her heels.
“She loves the girls but it just didn’t feel right for her to reunite with them at the moment,” a source told The Mirror.
“She has other priorities and obviously it was a bit of a problem that Victoria made it clear she wasn’t going to be part of the reunion.”0
